I bet some of you are thinking: If I am a more successful lawyer I will be more valuable to my clients. I am certain that is true, but I believe the better mindset is to strive to be more valuable to your clients and by doing so you will be more successful. If you are focused on your success, you are focused on what you need. If you are focused on being more valuable to your clients, you are focused on what they need.
I recently read a Randy Gage blog: Seek the Challenge. He says:
Instead of thinking what you want, you have to view the situation through how it will serve others. Change that viewpoint and everything changes.
I also found an interesting blog titled: 10 Amazing Life Lessons You Can Learn From Albert Einstein. I think each of the 10 lessons is pretty amazing and applicable to lawyers. Lesson Number 7 is Create Value. Einstein said:
Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.
Randy Gage and Einstein are right. The lesson for you is simple. If you want to get more business, quit thinking about what is in it for you and start thinking about what is in it for your clients.
